SOLO EXHIBITION BY SZYMON OLTARZEWSKI
11/04/2025 - 10/05/2025
The works exhibited in “Line and Volume” explore the boundaries of sculpture, creating a dialogue between material, dimension, and abstraction. Despite the apparent simplicity of these sinuous lines, which move like scribbles within frames, the works invite the viewer to reflect on the meaning of sculpture, its dimensionality, and the destiny of the line itself. The lines seem to possess an autonomous existence, emerging from a distant world and evoking a sense of mystery and curiosity. Rather than defining a clear image, the use of the frame becomes an attempt to capture a fragment of an eternal line that extends beyond the visible. Oltarzewski suggests a cosmological theory in which the frame represents a fragment of String Theory, connecting the universe in a continuous play of waves and twists.
The compression of this cylindrical line, not realized with a flexible and lightweight material but sculpted in marble—a hard and classical substance—implies a certain violence, forcing us to rethink and question the very volumetric essence of sculpture. Just as Piero Manzoni’s famous “Lines” series, composed of rolls of lines of varying lengths, represented a compression of the line within the drawing tube, Oltarzewski’s cylindrical scribbles unravel like serpentine lines, equally infinite, within rectangles.
With this series, the artist explores the freedom of form, using marble in an innovative way. His sculptures reflect fluidity, infinity, and constant transformation, striving to transcend both materiality itself and the possibilities of human experience. With remarkable technical skill, Oltarzewski merges classical tradition with contemporary innovation, creating works that challenge aesthetic conventions and reinterpret marble sculpture.
